It’s the Little Things Posted On 07 September 2021

Small Pleasures we can all embrace

Everyday can’t be a monumental celebration and as humans we can’t constantly be in a state of entertaining – it’s simply not sustainable. What is sustainable, and in fact, more enjoyable is taking the time to enjoy the little things in your daily life which bring you pleasure.

Your music – music is wonderfully transformative. The right song or soundtrack can transform your mood and turn your day around. Next time you hit a slump, try putting on your favourite song, singing along and then noticing how you feel.

Small wins – did you finally change that lightbulb you’ve been meaning to swap for week? Perhaps you made a dent in your ironing pile? A small victory should still be celebrated. If you’re having a day where you feel sluggish or unproductive, choose one such ‘job’ to complete and you can guarantee your food will be lifted when you complete it.

Sleep – we all complain we don’t get enough sleep so do something about it. Go to bed half an hour earlier, switch off your electronic devices and notice how you feel the next day.

Snacks – take time to savour your food. Choose something you have often and enjoy but rarely stop to appreciate (perhaps it’s the first cup of tea of the day or toast dripping with butter and marmite). Taking the time to sit down and enjoy your treat will make it taste twice as delicious.

Animal Therapy – there’s a reason animals are used for therapy, petting an animal can feel quite meditative. If you don’t have a pet, head to your local park or visit a friend who does.

Everyone will have different moments or parts of their day which make their ‘little things’ list. Savouring these mini moments won’t stop negative events happening but they may help to prevent you from over-emphasising their importance and allow you to feel more grounded and peaceful. As Robert Brault once said, “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realise they were the big things.”
