Have you ever wandered past a street sign or the name of a building and wondered where the unusual name heralds from? Or perhaps there’s that one individual who has achieved fame that is always referenced when your hometown crops up in conversation? Knowing a little about the notable figures who come from your area not only gives you a little pub trivia knowledge and information about your town but can also leave you feeling more connected to the place you call home. Read on to discover more about the notable characters who have a connection with Brentwood.

 

Brentwood has housed a plethora of sportsmen and women who have gone on to achieve success.

 

Franklin Roy Bruno, MBE (born 16th November 1961) 

First up in Franklin Bruno, a former professional boxer. Bruno competed from 1982 until 1996.  Bruno famously won the WBC heavyweight title from Oliver McCall at Wembley Stadium in 1995. Bruno also fought boxing celebrities Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, although sadly was defeated on both occasions.  

 

Steve Davis OBE (born 22nd August 1957) 

Perhaps the best-known sportsman who heralds from Brentwood is Steve Davis, whose achievements have earnt him recognition in the form of an OBE. An OBE is an order of the British Empire award and is the second highest ranking Order of the British Empire award. OBEs are awarded to people who have made a great impact in their line of work. Davis dominated the snooker arena for most of the 80s. He won six world titles and held the world number one ranking for seven consecutive seasons. Davis is famously the first snooker player to earn one million pounds in prize money.

 

John Paul "Johnny" Herbert (born 25th June 1964) 

Herbert can now be seen on our screen as an announcer for sky Sports F1. Previously, Herbert raced professionally and raced Formula One from 1989 to 2000. During his career, he won three races and placed 4th in the 1995 World Drivers' Championship.
