Time To Snuggle Up Posted On 16 November 2021

How to create the perfect cosy Snug

Winter is coming and with it so too comes the desire for a cosy, enveloping room to curl up in. Enter: the snug. The name alone draws you in and invites you to do exactly what this room is named for – to snuggle up. What you decide to use your snug for is up to you though.

When considering the location of your snug, think about how and when you’re going to use the space. If you plan to use it as a creative area during the day, you’ll require access to natural light, but if your aim is to watch TV in the evening, windows might not be necessary. If you want to encourage kids to spend time in the snug, choose a bright colour palette to add a fun feel to the space. Lighting your snug will be key to creating the ambiance of the room.

Layer your snug with lighting – incorporate dimmable ceiling lights with lamps and candles to help you control your lighting and adapt it to your mood. Perhaps try using an exposed lightbulb.

Choose a colour palette for your snug with tones that you find calming. Whether it’s a beige, a heritage grey or a deep blue, make the items in your room fit within this scheme. A neutral colour palette which allows you to build up the tones and make the room feel warm by using a variation of colours with cushions and throws.

A snug should not be too large to achieve the maximum feeling of cosiness so often requires less space than other rooms, as you’re usually only using it for relaxing. Consider adding a stud wall to a larger room to create a peaceful den that you can retreat to. If you’re worried it will feel too restricted, the size of your doorway is key. A wider entrance will add flexibility to the room and a feeling of space when needed. If you’re fortunate enough to have a double reception area, it makes sense to turn one into a cosy snug.

Creating the perfect snug will give your home that hygge feeling we’re all searching for as the weather turns chillier. So get creative and then snuggle up and enjoy the fruits of your labours.
